Independence Day On June 28th, 2011 Access students were introduced to some interesting aspects of the American history and culture. First, Mr. Larbi Boukhari asked the students to work in pairs or groups to take a multiple choice quiz about American history. The corrected answers served as a context in which to introduce some salient themes of early American history, culture and institutions such as the voyage of the Mayflower and the Pilgrims, Native American society, colonists and life in the 13 Colonies, slavery, Thanksgiving, etc. The group then read and discussed a text about the origins and meaning of Thanksgiving. Mrs. Anisa Sahibedeen taught students about the history and symbolism of the American flag. Finally, the students were encouraged to show their artistic talent by drawing the American flag. An American flag-topped cake added some flavor to the event. Many thanks to Mrs. Anisa Sahibedeen and Mr. Larbi Boukhari for introducing Access students to early US history. |
